what a farce

hi.. my previous post was like a small giant step for cy.. finally posted something other than words... im going to get more and more high tech so i might move on to pictures and other things like tagboards and finally end up with like a microwave..

anyway if you bothered to watch the video, notice how the alto and tenor saxaphones add depth to the song... its a great idea... anyway the song was done in a variation (EBEF#Be)of the standard EADGBe tuning on the guitar, so it sounds "different"... its really one of john mayer's best songs in my opinion...

speaking of music, i feel a deep conviction in me to say something about singapore idol... watching those contestants was like going through an emotional roller coaster.. i mean when jonathan leong starts to sing i feel happy and assured that singapore has good talent but then they move on to joakim and my blood pressure starts to shoot up... no, not that way cause im straight but because i don't understand why singaporeans vote to keep the best looking contestant in... so anyway the joakim bashing by the judges finishes and it doesnt matter cause the girls (and some guys) will still vote for him and finally it is hady's turn to perform and i am happy again cause hady is a talented singer and i really hope he wins singapore idol...

joakims aside, there are a few patterns that we can draw from the first two seasons... 1. the only two worthy contestants are two male vocalists... one chinese and one malay: sly(urghh) and taufik, and now jonathan and hady. 2. there is always a terrible tone deaf contestant who makes it through the rounds to the advanced stages: jerry(remember him?) and this season, joakim. 3. there is always a judge that everyone has a problem with: douglas olivero(bad grammar and nonsensical comments) and jacintha abisheganaden(good grammar and sometimes nonsensical comments). ok jacintha is improving because now she gives technical comments but people still laugh at her because she uses technical terms and gives advice on things like singing in an unsuitable key and people still laugh at her because they think she is talking about the key which opens the door to their house. pardon the condescending remark but anyway i feel realy sad because the talented dont deserve what they get... let me elaborate...

firstly, joakim shouldnt even be in the competition because his lines go flat all the time and he even starts in the wrong key... i swear he is tone deaf... ok enough said about that... you should understand what i mean... i really hope hady and jonathan make it all the way... now taufik, is an excellent singer... not great but excellent and i wouldnt mind buying his record if he does something i like... but how is his album doing now? i mean it sold well last year after he won but where is he now? do you even hear his songs on radio? isnt singapore idol supposed to produce the next singaporean popstar who can finally sing? the talent is there but where the hell is the airplay? i mean if we can put up with paris hilton on radio why not taufik? ok. next... why are we even patronising people like ashlee simpson and lindsay lohan and hillary duff when they cant even carry a tune? i mean these are people whose albums top charts man... they make it to top 10 at least! what is the world coming to... i cant even stand 10 seconds of ashlee simpson crowing l.o.v.e as if she ran out of words to fill up that stupid tune... recently i saw a quote in life!(straits times) from justin timberlake about taylor hicks... it said "... he cant even carry a tune in a bucket..."... ok that sort of reached new lows man... i mean first you have "singers" who cant sing selling albums and torturing my ears on radio... and now those lousy "singers" are criticising the good ones? what the hell is justin timberlake even doing in half of his songs?

its really wierd man... now i sort of have this theory about singapore and the dearth of talent on singapore idol... firstly, singaporeans are reserved and many of those with talent would rather study than actually bother developing their talent... secondly, we have so many stupid project superstars and project superband and project whatever lame shit that the talent is so badly dissipated and diluted by the sudden influx of "talent" shows channel u is so badly trying to milk... some of them are so badly done they resemble the lame variety shows on channel u itself... its kinda sad because people actually dig this stuff... they churn out contestants who are so mediocre and promote them to superstar status so much that the discerning ones who bother voting get turned off and just switch off when there is another idol or project competition... what is left, is the remainder, the undiscerning ones who vote for the best looking contestant cause the music can be manufactured anyway and those who can tell but cant be bothered...

and when those who can tell the tone deaf from the non tone deaf start to complain, you get this whole singapore idol brouhaha... it isnt really a talent show that showcases the best of singapore anymore because the talent pool is so badly diluted and dissipated that all of this is slowly becoming a farce, for the telcom company and advertisers and the television station to make a convenient buck. those who suffer, are the discerning listeners and the talent pool of singapore.

the television stations should realise that it is quality that matters, not quantity. channel u especially...

nothing much can be done to prevent this tragedy from happening. what we can do now, however, is draw a few lessons from this farce that might actually make the music scene of our country become the butt of jokes...

firstly, we should learn how to listen and try to be a discerning listener at the same time. we often listen to whatever junk that we get from media and people around us that causes us get influenced, and sways our logic. it is important for us to have a filter and more important to have a sifter that sorts things out in our minds, something that tells us not to act on our impulses all the time... (like vote for joakim)

secondly, learn to do something about things that we dont like... we are often too guilty of being apathetic and the biggest example of a prevalent culture of apathy is in national service where every generation of sevicemen ignores the suffering they go through because of the inconveniences of the system and do not bother to sort them out, opting more often than not to bite the bullet than to solve the problem...(like vote for contestants who can sing)

thirdly and most importantly, have an opinion because it forms the basis of decision making, which ultimately culminates into the kind of lives that we lead...

ok that was my sorry attempt at writing something that made sense after 2 years of shit in camp...

thanks for reading if you made it this far... pardon the bad english...

logic?

hello blog... im 20 now. i celebrated my birthday at the end of last month and im thankful to be so blessed by my family and friends. i wish that turning 20 would finally symbolise the start of my adulthood and thus, things that happen to me would finally start to make sense...

well sadly i was mistaken coz i realised that saf still doesnt make sense. much less than other things i consider crazy. for example, man u buying michael carrick for 18 million, or the cab fare increase...

i will attempt to describe one of many incidents that happened in camp which has made me totally dumbfounded... seriously.. some of the things that happen in saf totally transcends explanation and logic... this week, i was told to report for something called "pre-ict(in camp training) preparation"(note the kind of english used)... the reason for coming to this "pre-preparatory"(f*ck army english) or whatever course is to allow us to prepare for an upcoming ICT for reservists... this is basically a two week period when reservists come back to refresh their combat or whatever skills and catch up with old friends and make the canteen vendors happy... it seemed fine as i am an active serviceman and therefore should be on the forefront of army technology, thus qualifying me to be one of the servicemen who would do demonstrations and guide the reservists along as they do their thing...

however, i was scheduled to attend bronco driving course, a course conducted by an external unit which happened to start on the same day as this ICT that i was supposed to prepare for. it was therefore obvious that i had to miss the ICT to attend the course as i was earmarked for it and therefore it took precedence over ICT. naturally, i realised that it didnt make sense for me to continue in this "pre-preparatory" course as i was attending a course which would prepare me for something that i could not even attend. therefore, i decided to approach a few superiors, telling them about my situation... i even took pains to explain that attending a preparatory course for something i would not even attend would mean lost production time as i could not resume my normal work in the workshop and that making me spend time in this thing would only waste my service time and work hours... it all seemed perfectly understandable... well at least from a normal logical point of view... somebody else who was in my situation actually got what he deserved, which was to get removed from the "preparatory" course and sent back to the workshop to do work...

alas, it wasnt meant to be... you see, logic in the army is warped... my superiors decided that it was good for me to still attend the preparatory course as it made up for "lost time" in the actual thing... as such, it was fair that i attend this to "balance" whatever that i would miss...

it felt like a slap in my face... logic has lost to laziness... something as simple as taking a lousy name out of a name list could not be done because it was "too troublesome" to approach the commanders... as you can tell from the tone of this entry, i am not taking this well as i simple cannot fathom the warped logic behind the abovementioned example... ok enough said...
